Review: A Home-Grown Production To Be Proud Of
As her international debut directing a musical, it comes in handy that Magdalene Minnaar is a well-respected performer and long-standing player in the arts herself. She shows with CALLING US HOME that she has a great understanding of the space she is working with as well as the actors.
She is thoughtful towards each cast member - none becoming wallflowers - and brings out the most in both the acting and singing of her leads. The minimal but skillful set design and use of unique projections was also highly effective.
Review: Sarafina Magazine
Magdalene Minnaar is one of those people who makes you question when she has time to sleep. She is the founder of Little Maestros and Biblioteek Productions, where she also serves as Artistic Director. She is an accomplished actress and singer, having performed the coveted role of Christine Daaé in the international touring production of The Phantom of The Opera as well as performing alongside Josh Groban during his tour to South Africa last year. Currently she is directing Calling Us Home, a highly anticipated new musical which is about to take South Africa by storm. We sat down to chat about the many hats that she has worn during her career.
Review: SA Talent delivers Superb Original Musical
The direction of SA super soprano, Magdalene Minnaar, was focused, detailed, and spellbinding throughout the whole 180 minutes. With Calling Me Home being Minnaar’s international debut as a musical director, she has positioned herself as a force to be reckoned with. In Minnaar’s own words, it is her mission to reinvent the face of classical music in South Africa, and with Calling Me Home, her first step was in fact a giant leap towards this goal.
This production of Calling Me Home is an original, never before staged musical, and besides one or two miniscule teething problems, Minnaar and her team created and presented a South African production, which we all can be immensely proud of.
Review: Josh Groban’s Stages
With so many South African hands involved in this production, I have to highlight the majestic soprano voice of our own Magdalene Minnaar. Most South Africans will remember her from a previous Pieter Toerien Production of Phantom of the Opera, where Minnaar played the role of Christine. The duets with Groban, All I Ask of You and If I loved you, were perfectly combined in a harmonious collaboration of two great classical voices. It is impossible to believe that Groban and Minnaar only had 20 minutes to rehearse their two duets.
Minnaar told Stage and Screen that it was an amazing experience to perform with Groban. “Not only is Josh one of the nicest guys whom I had the opportunity to work with, but such a giving artist on stage. I will perform with him anytime again” Minnaar said with her beautiful smile.
