DIRECTING

Magdalene Minnaar has been creating theatrical music experiences since 2001 and began directing opera in 2004. Her current practice spans opera, music theatre, and interdisciplinary performance, with a particular focus on clear dramaturgy, performer-led storytelling, and productions that demand strong integration between music, text, and physical expression.

Her recent directing work includes Aida, Terrence McNally’s Master Class, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, L'elisir d'amore, La Voix Humaine, Tosca, L’elisir d’amore and Le Nozze di Figaro for Cape Town Opera and La Serva Padrona at the Marin Držić Theatre in Dubrovnik. Her productions are frequently noted for their clarity of storytelling, musical sensitivity, and strong ensemble work.

A central strand of Minnaar’s practice is the development and reimagining of classical music within a South African context. Over nearly two decades, she has initiated, commissioned, and produced a substantial body of original work, including chamber operas, interdisciplinary projects, and large-scale operas.

Her approach to new work is deeply collaborative. She frequently supports projects from early conception through to performance, working closely with composers, librettists, and performers in a facilitative, guiding role that prioritises artistic clarity, feasibility, and long-term sustainability.
