From the 18th to the 20th of July, Cape Town will have the opportunity to see a brand new Afrikaans opera, featuring a formidable team of creatives, especially women. Die Vertrek is written, directed and designed by Marí Borstlap (Director of Die Leeftyd van ‘n Orgidiee which won Best Shortfilm and Best Director at the 2018 kykNet Silwerskermfees) features Magdalene Minnaar (Soprano) and Jane DeWet (actress and dancer – currently featured in the title role of the Showmax series The Girl from St. Agnes). Wilken Calitz (violin and guitar) is the composer and will also perform the music live alongside Corneil Muller (cello – currently seen on The Voice SA Season 3).

Die Vertrek is a chamber opera inspired by both real life events and the poem "Death is Nothing at All" by Henry Scott Holland. A mother finds herself shortly after her death in a magical invisible room from where she tries to make contact with her grieving daughter on earth. The story is told by song, dance, music and enchanting visual design.

Marie Vogts is the production manager and producer.
